A coffee after lunch / Un cafecito después de comer

Usually, when I go out to eat, I do it in the company of my children, so we usually order something for the two of us (or the 3 of us if the eldest is encouraged to go out with us), or failing that, a personal combo for each of us, but the so-called executive menu has never been an option.

I always see in the offers of the food centers this option, which besides being quite complete, it is a quick way out with a little bit of everything, and the best thing is that they serve it in an expeditious way, as if to eat and go back to work. At least, that's how it was in my childhood, when Dad would eat on the street and for some reason I would go with him.

The best thing about these menus was that the coffee at the end of the meal was included, and Dad instead of ordering it black (black coffee) would order it with milk, to make the mischief of letting me try it, since by then, Mom refused to let my brother and me drink coffee, because she saw it as a bad habit that had been instilled in her, and which she could not get rid of, because if she did not drink coffee in the morning, she would spend the day with a headache.

But since it doesn't hurt once a year, Dad would let me try a sip of his coffee the few times my doctor's appointments coincided with the ones he took me to. That was our secret.

And just in recent days, when I took the opportunity to escape after my work to have lunch out, since my children were leaving their schools later, I chose to eat an executive menu, and so would be my little skill ordering this that as a drink they offered me soda, wine or water, and I thinking it would be an extra credit, I ordered water, because I considered that the charge would be less, when the reality is that it was already stipulated in the price.

Such was the tasting and the reverie of that moment for me, that the time passed quickly, and when I saw the time, I had just enough time to pick up my little son and go back home, but when I was already gathering my things, the waitress told me, the menu comes with coffee included.

I hesitated a little, because of the time issue, but I called my older son to check if he was already home, and as he said yes, I asked him to go get his brother, and although his response was with annoyance, he ended up doing it, so I could enjoy that last treat of the day.

I ordered a coffee with milk, which here they call “cortadito” and although I did not use sugar, I did stir with the spoon, more out of habit when I added the sweetener, or perhaps to hear the tinkling sound when I brushed the cup with it. They are sounds that trigger direct triggers to memories.

That cup of coffee represented not only the closing of a special meal, but brought back all those memories associated with that particular ritual of having a cup of coffee after a meal.

Of course. Luckily my son was able to pick up his brother from school that day.
