More Updates On My Garden: Tending The Crops.

avatar

Greetings to you friends here and all garden enthusiasts. Hope you're enjoying your gardening activities.

I'm back again to share more updates on my crops with you. I'm thrilled to report that my crops are doing great, especially the maize.

At this stage, the crops, most especially the ugu (pumpkin) vegetable and okra, needed a boost - fertilizer, to aid their growth. These vegetables aren't growing well as they should. I believe applying manure will help a lot. I need to eat more vegetables.

I always prefer using poultry dung or manure on my crops, as it's also natural and organic fertilizer. And there was no exception this time around.

Over the weekend when I visited my parents, my mom gave me some poultry dung. That's her go-to manure option, and her crops always have good yields. Luckily, there's a poultry farm nearby where she easily buys the dung.

So yesterday, decided to apply the poultry dung but first I needed to tackle the weeds that were gradually springing I before they can spread more. Weeding the garden would help prevent the weeds from competing for water and nutrients with the crops.

Weeding done, I applied the poultry dung on the crops, ensuring that each crop got a fair share. Na all of them waka come. 😅

Applying the poultry dung on okra.

Same on the maize

The curry got some fertilizer too Seeing this curry thrive gives me joy. It was almost dead during the dry season but with the coming of the rains, it sprang up again.

While weeding, I noticed that some maize plants were under pest attack. The pests had eaten the tassels of my maize plants, leaving behind traces of disease infestation on them. This is rather disheartening, as it will probably lead to stunted growth and lower yields in the affected crops.

On a closer look, I saw one of the culprits, this slimy little nitwit, crawling out of the maize. Apparently, it has had a good feast on the maize. Hehehe.

Enough of this pest and snail jamboree on my crops, I'm getting pesticides the next time I go to the market.

After weeding

More leaves on the yam plants. I think they're doing great.

Ah, the chilis are beginning to ripe. Will be ready for harvesting soon.

There's the scentleaf too. They're the perfect veggies for my ofe akwụ (palm fruit stew), porridge beans, palmoil rice (concoction rice). I often add them to my pasta too. The taste is in the eating. 😋

I also harvested some waterleaves which I'll use to make vegetable soup.

And here's a wrap on my garden update.

Thank you for reading.

The corn looks happy after removing the weeds and tending the soil. We don't have many caged chickens where we are, as most are free-range, but we use cow manure as fertilizer.

Absolutely, and they're going to flourish more now that they've eaten some nutritious supplement. 😅
Cow manure, didn't know that it's good too. I know about pig and goat manure.
Thanks for coming around.

Those things are expensive in the market now. You're lucky to have a place you can grow them.

I'm very fine now. Thanks for asking.
