His first aircraft was a modest Farman Mf.11 "Shorthorn," which he described as slow and shaky but thrilling nonetheless. The early reconnaissance planes, such as the R.E.7, were primitive, reaching speeds of only about 110 km/h and height limits around 1,500 meters, making them vulnerable to enemy fighters like the Fokker E.III with synchronized machine guns.
In late 1916, Bishop trained at Salisbury Plain, flying the "Shorthorn" in a tough environment filled with noisy aircraft and inexperienced instructors. Once qualified, he was assigned to air defense duties over southern England, monitoring Zeppelin raids but often witnessing no action.
In February 1917, Bishop was sent to the front lines at Arras, where he encountered the infamous "Flying Circus" led by the German ace Manfred von Richthofen, the "Red Baron." As a novice, Bishop's first combat engagement was on March 25, 1917, flying as "Tail-End Charlie," the last aircraft in a formation. During this encounter, he shot down his first enemy plane, an Albatros D.III, with a close-range burst, marking the beginning of his legendary career.
Bishop quickly developed a reputation for aggressive tactics, often striking from advantageous heights with the sun behind him—techniques similar to those employed by fellow ace Albert Ball. His keen situational awareness and ability to coordinate with wingmen made him a formidable opponent, and he amassed an impressive record of aerial victories.
On April 7, 1917, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, notably for attacking and setting fire to German observation balloons—challenging targets protected by heavy defenses. In the following weeks, Bishop's kill count rapidly increased, and by April's end, he had shot down 17 enemy aircraft, making him the top pilot in his squadron and among all Allied aces.
The Notorious April and the Height of His Combat Success
April 1917 became known as the "Bloody April" for Bishop's squadron, which suffered catastrophic losses—receiving 105% casualties—due to relentless German fighter attacks and dangerous combat conditions. Out of the original pilots, 18 were shot down, with many replacements quickly losing their lives. Amidst the chaos, Bishop distinguished himself by unprecedented combat success and fearless tactics, often engaging multiple enemy planes simultaneously.
His most famous mission occurred on June 2, 1917, when he led a solo assault on an enemy aerodrome at Estourmel. He attacked seven aircraft on the ground, opening fire with nearly 100 rounds, and shot down an aircraft on the runway. Despite heavy fire and a close call with enemy fighters, Bishop returned unharmed, cementing his reputation as a daring and expert pilot.
Encounters with Danger and Controversy
Throughout his service, Bishop faced life-threatening situations—including a near-miss when shot from the ground, where he narrowly escaped with a burning aircraft. His combat record by June 1918 stood at 70 confirmed kills, including the destruction of prominent enemy aces like Paul Billik.
However, his aggressive approach drew suspicion among some fellow pilots, who questioned whether he sometimes exaggerated or fabricated engagements for personal glory. Final Missions and Downfall
One of Bishop's most daring missions was on July 1, 1918, when he led a solo strike against a German airfield at Estourmel. Billy Bishop retired to a quieter life, enjoying social activities with his wife Margaret in Montreal. He died peacefully in 1956 while vacationing in Florida. His legacy as Canada's top flying ace remains intact, celebrated for his daring combat style, tactical brilliance, and importance in military aviation history. His record and exploits served as inspiration for generations of pilots.
