Churches of St. Clement and St. Anthony of Padua in Prague, Czech Republic

I went to school. There was a church and a cemetery behind the school. When we played ball games, sometimes the ball would fly over to the cemetery. I decided that I would go to that church and cemetery sometime.

It was just a small church where Mass was celebrated only once a month. It was always closed. I didn't always have time either.

In the end, almost fifty years passed before I fulfilled my resolution.

Burials stopped in the cemetery in 1886. Most of the graves have long since disappeared. I'll just show you one of the most interesting.

It is and at the same time is not a military grave.

In 1866 we were at war with Prussia. It lasted 2 months and 9 days. 137,000 dead were left on the battlefields. Then cholera broke out. The wounded continued to die for many months after the war. This is the story of one of the soldiers.

Private Václav Hora distinguished himself in combat. Three days later he was severely wounded and captured. His father came for him and brought him home. He died of his wounds two months after the end of the war. He was 25 years old. His father died two years later.

When children bury their parents, it is sad but natural. When a parent buries their child... I have a son too. I can imagine it.

What can I say about this church? I'm sorry. I can't see well anymore. That's why the photo is blurry.

There is, of course, an altar in the church.

Side altar.

A place for preaching.

A vessel for holy water.

The organ.

At the end of the 19th century the small village turned into a large suburb of Prague. Today it lies in the wider centre of the city. The church was too small for its capacity. Therefore, the church of St. Christopher was supplemented by the nearby neo-Gothic church of St. Anthony of Padua. The entire parish moved to the new church.

This church was built in 1886-1889. I was also baptized in this church once.

After the end of the monarchy in 1918, the Catholic Church in our country split. Many believers joined evangelical churches. See the golden chalice on the roof of one of the houses on the side street?

This is the headquarters of one of the congregational evangelical churches.
