Church of St.Adalbertus in Libeň

I have been passing by this church for five years now, and for ten months of the year I take the tram every weekday on my way to work. But I only enter it once a year. This time I decided to see and photograph the church as a tourist.

You'll know from these ten months that I'm a teacher. I have two months off in the summer. And now, before Christmas, the pupils of our school regularly perform at a charity concert in this church, which is the closest to our school.

The first photo shows the front of the church as I drive into it. Long before the concert starts. The second photo shows the same church after the concert and from the side. There is a time gap of about an hour and a half between the two photographs. Is night or day photography more interesting?

But gradually. We're entering the church. It's completely atypical. It was consecrated in 1905 in the Art Nouveau style. It was supposed to be a temporary structure. It was to exist only until sufficient funds could be raised to build a larger and more dignified sanctuary.

The church is only partially built of brick. A large part of it is wooden. It was expected to stand for only a few years. But then came World War I. And then there were problems with buying land and building permits. Then World War II, the Communist takeover in 1948. In 1951, it was decided that the atheist state didn't need a new church.

The pulpit and a few other details... It should be written that the money for the construction of this church and the new church that was to replace the original one came from collections among the faithful. In 1951 the church building association was dissolved and the money confiscated.

The organ belongs to the church. It is located above the entrance.

The Christian church consists of a painted Stations of the Cross, subsidiary chapels, altars and statues. Art Nouveau details painted on wood, colourful partially mosaic windows are visible.

Christmas is coming. Christmas must not miss Bethlehem.

But after all, I'm here for the concert. And it was a good one. Raised about $500 for church repairs. The church is not in good shape. Since it was only supposed to be temporary, maintenance was neglected early on.

This is the fifth conert I have attended as a teacher at this school. I hope to experience many more. Although maybe not as a teacher anymore.

Kolem tohoto kostela jezdím už pět let, deset měsíců v roce každý všední den tramvají cestou do práce. Do kostela však vstoupím jen jednou za rok. Tentokrát jsem se rozhodl, že si kostel prohlédnu a vyfotografuji jako turista.

Z těch deseti měsíců poznáte, že jsem učitel. V létě mám dva měsíce volna. A teď před Vánocemi žáci naší školy pravidelně vystupují na charitativním koncertu v tomto kostele, který je naší škole nejblíže.

Na první fotografii je průčelí kostela, když k němu přijíždím. Dlouho před začátkem koncertu. Druhá fotografie ukazuje tentýž kostel po koncertě a z boku. Mezi oběma fotografiemi je časový odstup asi hodiny a půl. Je zajímavější noční nebo denní fotografie?

Ale postupně. Vstupujeme do kostela. Je úplně atypický. Byl vysvěcen v roce 1905 a je postaven a vyzdoben v secesním stylu. Měla to být jen dočasná stavba. Měl existovat do doby, než se podaří získat dostatek prostředků na stavbu větší a důstojnější svatyně.

Kostel je pouze částečně postaven z cihel. Jeho velká část je dřevěná. Předpokládalo se, že bude stát jen několik let. Jenže pak přišla první světová válka. A pak se objevily problémy s nákupem pozemků a stavebním povolením. Pak druhá světová válka, komunistický převrat v roce 1948. V roce 1951 bylo rozhodnuto, že ateistický stát nový kostel nepotřebuje.

Kazatelna a několik dalších detailů... Je třeba napsat, že peníze na stavbu tohoto kostela a nového kostela, který měl nahradit ten původní, pocházely ze sbírek mezi věřícími. V roce 1951 bylo sdružení pro stavbu kostela rozpuštěno a peníze zabaveny.

Varhany patří ke kostelu. Jsou umístěny nad vchodem. Křesťanský kostel tvoří dálě malovaná křížová cesta, vedlejší kaple, oltáře a sochy. K vidění jsou secesní detaily malované na dřevě, barevná částečně mozaiková okna. Blíží se Vánoce. Nesmí chybět ani Betlém.

Ale koneckonců jsem tu kvůli koncertu. A ten byl dobrý. Vybralo se asi 500 dolarů na opravy kostela. Kostel není v dobrém stavu. Protože měl být jen dočasný, údržba se zanedbala už na začátku.

Toto je pátý koncert, kterého jsem se jako učitel na této škole zúčastnil. Doufám, že jich zažiji ještě mnoho. I když možná už ne jako učitel.
