Sugar only affect the rich

Greetings!

As funny and controversial as the title of this post may sound, that’s what we grew up knowing in the village. We never saw anyone in the neighborhood suffering from diabetes due to excess sugar, so whenever we heard that too much sugar was bad, those words never settled in our hearts. In fact, we consumed more sugary things, especially adding extra sugar cubes to garri or tea. Who would soak garri or sip tea without sugar topping the taste? Definitely not us! Is it natural fruits with a high sugary taste? Oh yeah, sugarcane was at the top of the list, and we never showed it mercy on our farms. Mango was another one, and whenever we indulged, mom and dad would scold us, shouting that we were taking in excess sugar. But they never did anything to stop us. We knew they weren't concerned about the sugary taste; they were concerned about the stomach issues it caused.

As time went on, I grew up to meet uncles who despised sugar to the core. There was one—he's late now—who lived in Port Harcourt, and anytime he visited, he would take Lipton or coffee without sugar. Gosh! Those things are bitter, and whenever he saw us drinking with sugar, he would start pouring all the lectures on how bad sugar is for the body.

Well, I knew that sugar in excess is bad for the body, but I never took that into consideration until I served under someone, a pastor who was suffering from diabetes. I was his accountant and everything, so I was always with him, and that was the moment in my life that I got scared of how bad sugar is for our bodies. He's late now, and when I heard about his demise, I thanked God because he needed to rest from that hellish sickness.

How I've Been Trying to Reduce Sugar Intake:

I won’t lie here, I haven’t been taking extreme measures like drinking bitter leaf water to neutralize the sugar in my body, if there’s anything like that. Lol. Neither have I been taking tea and coffee without sugar. No. The only thing I do is avoid consistently drinking soft drinks like Coca-Cola, and thank God I don’t consume alcohol either. Thank God also that the ‘sweeter’ ones like Maltina or Malta Guinness are now very costly. The only drink I take once in a while is Lacasera, which I know is sugary also, but I do that once in a while. Then caffeinated drinks with low sugar (Omo! I recently found out that they’re almost at the same level of sugar).

Do I drink non-sugary drinks?

The answer is a big No!

There’s one particular drink that’s somehow tasteless, and I can’t see myself drinking it. The fact that I’m avoiding sugar does not mean I should be taking drinks that taste like salt because they don’t have sugar. No way!

Thanks for reading.

I think it depends on the country or the culture. Here in my country it doesn't matter if you are rich or poor, you can have diabetes because it is common to consume sugar.

This got me laughing because it's true 😅😅😅 village life is sweet o, eating fruits anyhow is not same as taking junk like we do here.

Hahahahah!
Malt is very costly. N600 to N700 for small malt that Coca-Cola is bigger than 😅.
Yeah, true. The sugar content in fruit is far below the 1.5% in drinks we have these days

Who says sugar only affects the poor, my dear do not have that impression, don't you eat sugar at all, sugar affects everyone both rich and poor
