Which Hurts More: Watching Your Sibling Suffer Every Day or Losing Them to Illness?
Happy Sunday Hivers!
My mother’s second cousin only has one brother. Both of their parents have already passed away. Their family used to be four: their father, mother, her, and her brother. Now, she is left carrying the weight of so much loss and suffering.

Seven years ago, their father went through intense suffering due to multiple illnesses. His health slowly declined until he eventually passed away. It was painful to witness, especially seeing how illness can gradually take a person’s strength. The same was true for their mother, who also endured a long battle with sickness.

Last year, their mother died from breast cancer. It was a heartbreaking loss, but somehow, she found a small source of comfort because she still had her only brother. Even in grief, at least she was not completely alone.
But how painful must it be to still be grieving the loss of your mother, only to watch your only sibling slowly suffer from a serious illness?

Her brother is single and lives in their house, while she is married with one child and a grandchild. After their mother’s death, she had to face another difficult reality when her brother was diagnosed with diabetes. His condition has weakened him so much that he can no longer walk for long because his legs tremble. Most of the time, he only stands up to go to the bathroom, take a bath, or eat.
It is deeply painful for a sister to watch her brother gradually lose his strength because of illness. Day by day, she sees the smile slowly fade from his face, replaced by sadness and exhaustion. There is a quiet kind of heartbreak in witnessing someone you love grow weaker each day, knowing that their suffering continues, and all you can do is stay beside them and watch.
Last week, her daughter posted on Facebook that her mother’s brother had already passed away. In a way, it was very painful news. But on the other side, there was also a quiet sense of relief, knowing that he is finally at rest and no longer suffering.
Even so, it means she is now the only one left in her immediate family after losing her parents and her only sibling. That kind of loneliness is hard to imagine. Yet somehow, there is a different kind of peace in knowing she no longer has to watch her brother suffer every single day.

I can see the deep stress and exhaustion on my mother’s cousin’s face. It truly shows how heavy her burden has been. This is also one of the hardest parts of having a very small family, when life brings painful trials like this, there are fewer people to share the weight and help carry the emotional load.
All I can really do now is pray for her constantly, asking God to give her strength to face each new day and continue living despite the pain, the loss, and the silence left behind by the people she loved most.
Thank you for reading and see you on my next blog. Cheers!
