What are the Pros and Cons of Living in a Coastal Area? Check this Out

Happy Thursday Hivers!

When we hear the term “coastal area,” the first things that usually come to mind are beautiful views and fresh seafood, right? Naturally, the pros are what come to mind first, especially if we tend to think positively. But when we talk about coastal areas, just like any other place, it’s not only the advantages that are there, the disadvantages are part of the picture too. In this blog, I’ll share the pros and cons we’ve personally experienced from living near a coastal area.

The Pros:

Being Able to Walk Barefoot Every Day

So we start with the pros. No matter where I go, I always find myself searching for a beach. Do you know why? It’s because I love walking barefoot. That’s something I really miss when I’m away from my home in Leyte.

Whenever I’m in Leyte, I make it a point to walk barefoot in the mornings and afternoons, except on days when the weather isn’t good or when I’m too busy. I truly believe it’s good for our health.

Easy Access to Fresh and Free Seafood

If you live near a coastal area, you can often enjoy free seafood, especially if you’re willing to put in some effort. You can fish or gather shellfish, and you’ll have seafood at no cost. In the city, you won’t get free seafood unless someone treats you. But living near the coast, you can survive even on a small income because there’s plenty of free food available.

Breathtaking Views and Fresh Ocean Air

The best part of living near the coast is the view, especially during sunset. This is one reason why people love hanging out by the beach in the late afternoon. It really helps relieve stress, right? Watching the sunset, seeing the calm sea, and breathing the fresh ocean air, who wouldn’t enjoy spending time in a place like this?

This is why my family and our neighbors love this spot for afternoon gatherings. Some bring guitars, some just chat, and others have small picnics.

The Cons:

Of course, whenever there are pros, there are also cons. Living near a coastal area is wonderful, but you also need to be prepared to handle the challenges that come with it. And here are the cons:

Exposure to Strong Typhoon Winds

It can also be scary living near the coast, especially during typhoons. The wind can get extremely strong, and there’s a high chance that your roof could get blown away. And of course, if the wind is really strong, large debris can get caught in our fence.

Ever since I was a child until now, we’ve replaced our fence many times because it always gets damaged during storms. Imagine how often typhoons happen in a year, the fence keeps breaking again and again. Eventually, we reached a point where we just stopped putting up a fence.

Of course, having a fence would be better, it provides some safety and prevents strangers or animals from entering the property. But for now, we just endure living without one.

Easily Rusts Appliances and Roofing

One of the challenges of living near the coast is that appliances and roofing tend to rust easily. No matter how careful you are, you can’t fully control it, being close to the sea naturally causes this to happen. It’s just something you have to accept when living by the coast.

Despite the disadvantages, we still love living near the coast. A friend once asked me why, and I explained that aside from owning the land and house, the advantages make it worth staying. Everything in life has ups and downs, just like the heart, which isn’t healthy if it’s only up or only down. Even with the challenges, the advantages make living near the coast truly enjoyable.
