The Day You Plant Is Not the Day You Harvest

Happy Friday Hivers!

I remember when my mother planted a wax apple (tambis) tree. My sister asked, “Mom, when do you think we'll be able to eat its fruits?”

My mother simply smiled and replied, “It’s okay even if it takes a long time. What matters is that we’ve already planted it.”

That lesson has stayed with me ever since. It’s perfectly normal that we cannot harvest what we planted today. Every seed needs time to grow, develop strong roots, and bear fruit. Whether in gardening or in life, patience is part of the process, and every harvest begins with a seed planted in faith and hope.

That conversation between my mother and my sister happened 25 years ago. Back then, none of us could have imagined that the small wax apple (tambis) tree my mother planted would eventually provide us with countless harvests over the years.

There was even a time when my mother sold some of the fruits because her children were away in Leyte, and the tree was producing many fruits. What started as a tiny seedling eventually became a generous tree that kept on giving.

Just two days ago, my brother harvested another batch of wax apples because the tree was once again loaded with fruits. Many of them were difficult to reach since they were growing at the very top of the tree, leaving some for the birds to enjoy. But since my brother likes eating wax apples, he was determined to gather as many as he could. Despite the challenge of the tree's height and the location of the fruits, he patiently worked his way through.

After a few minutes, he managed to fill a large bowl with freshly harvested wax apples.

Looking at that bowl of fruits reminded me of my mother's words 25 years ago. The day you plant is not the day you harvest, but with patience and care, the rewards can be far greater than you ever imagined.

Thank you for reading and see you on my next blog. Cheers!
