My Childhood Food Story: From Spoiled to Simple Living

Happy Tuesdayday Hivers!

When I was seven years old, my aunt, my mother’s sister, took me to live with her because she did not have a daughter. My mother agreed. My aunt’s husband was working abroad, so they were living a fairly comfortable life.

Since I was the youngest in the house, my aunt spoiled me a lot. She gave me almost everything I wanted. Because of this, I became very picky with food, and it became difficult for my aunt to discipline me. There was a time when I refused to eat unless the dish was hotdog. The bread had to be purple, and the drink had to be orange juice. I refused to eat vegetables and most other foods except the ones I mentioned.

Eventually, my aunt became worried that I might get sick because of my unhealthy eating habits, so she decided to bring me back to my real family. When I returned home, I noticed that all my siblings were used to eating vegetables because that was what my parents could afford. One time, I remember crying while eating vegetables, but I still had to eat them because there was a stick beside me, and I would get hit if I refused to eat. Since then, I slowly learned to like vegetables. One of the vegetables I eventually grew to love is spinach. Have you ever tried eating it?

As I grew older, my favorite way to eat spinach was simply steamed, then mixed with calamansi, raw onions, tomatoes, and soy sauce. I’m perfectly happy having that as my main dish.

Before, we used to grow a lot of spinach, but a storm destroyed most of our plants. Last February, we were able to get new seedlings, so we transferred them into plastic bags filled with good soil. Spinach is actually very easy to grow and doesn’t require much care, so it grows quickly.

Yesterday, this is how big the plants have become. They were planted on February 16, and now they are already very healthy. My mother transferred them near the base of our malunggay tree so they can climb and spread there.

Food has become very expensive nowadays, and it’s really better to grow your own vegetables if you can. It truly helps you save money.

Thank you for reading and see you on my next blog. Cheers!
