Have You Experienced the Effects of War?

Happy Sunday Hivers!

This month, countries like Iran, the United States, and Israel are at war but the impact is not limited to them alone. Neighboring countries are also feeling the effects, as missiles and attacks extend beyond borders.

I’ve seen Facebook posts from the Middle East showing how some people are already traumatized by the constant explosions and missiles hitting buildings. Who wouldn’t be afraid in that kind of environment? You never know if you’ll still be alive in the next few hours.

In our case, we haven’t experienced the war firsthand since we are far from the conflict. However, we are still feeling its effects in a different way through the shortage of oil supply, which leads to rising fuel prices. As we all know, fuel is one of the most important aspects of the economy. When oil supply becomes limited, fuel prices automatically increase, especially affecting basic necessities.

Three days ago, I traveled to Cebu to take care of some matters. When I purchased my ferry ticket, I wasn’t surprised to see a notice about the fare increase. It wasn’t unexpected, as fuel prices in all the gasoline stations in our area had already gone up. With that, it’s only natural to expect that transportation fares would increase as well.

Most of the time when I travel to Cebu, I usually choose an air-conditioned accommodation because of the intense heat in the Philippines. But this time, both on my trip to Cebu and back to Leyte, I chose a non-air-conditioned option. The price difference was around $2, which is already a significant amount in our place. So, I opted for the cheaper accommodation to save money.

Based on the news, the Philippines’ oil supply is expected to last only until April 15. If the supply runs out, prices of goods will likely rise even further. Hopefully, the war will come to an end soon so that oil prices and the cost of basic necessities can finally return to normal.

In times like this, we are reminded of how deeply connected the world is, how conflicts far from us can still affect our daily lives. All we can do is hope for peace and better days ahead, not just for our country, but for everyone affected.
