Clueless

Happy Sunday Hivers!

I was completely clueless and didn’t notice that my team had a surprise planned for my birthday. If someone sings you “Happy Birthday” when in fact you already celebrated more than two weeks ago, of course you’d say, “But it’s not my birthday today!” and everyone burts out laughing.

It was the first Friday of the month, and in our company, we always have a mass every first Friday. After the mass, all the September birthday celebrants were called to be blessed by the priest. Of course, I wasn’t part of that since I’m an August baby. I had no idea that my team had actually prepared a surprise for me!

While they were buying the food, someone from the team kept me entertained so I wouldn’t notice when the food was brought in. After they finished preparing, everyone gathered inside our boss’s office. A little later, someone from the team called me and asked me to come in. Since I was completely clueless, I went straight inside, thinking maybe we had an emergency meeting. The moment I stepped in, everyone started singing “Happy Birthday.”

I just laughed and told them, “But it’s not my birthday today!” but they kept singing and laughing. Who would have expected that it was really for me, especially since my birthday was already two weeks ago?

After singing, they apologized to me because their surprise was so late. During my actual birthday, some of our teammates were on leave since my birthday fell between the holidays, so we weren’t able to celebrate that day.

They prepared a cupcake with a candle for me to blow, and they also got a big round pizza and ice cream. I was so happy because the ice cream they bought was my favorite — cookies and cream.

I had just recently transferred to this company, and I really love this team because their camaraderie is amazing, it’s so rare to find a group like this. I’m the type of person who usually takes a long time to feel comfortable in a new place because I like to observe first. But with this team, it only took me two weeks to feel at ease, thanks to their wonderful personalities. That’s why I was completely clueless that day. Who would ever expect to be sung “Happy Birthday” when it’s not even your birthday?
