A jungle in the city: My visit to Medellín's conservation park [ENG// ESP]

Today marks my fifth day in the #Hive14challenge—what excitement! We are getting closer to those 14 days, and today I bring you this journey, yes, a journey through this little piece of forest in the middle of the city of Medellín. Today, I want to talk about my visit to the Zoo.

Hello, my Worldmappin people! Today I want to tell you about this trip to a parallel world. I say that because it truly felt incredible to be in such a large zoo, and one so deep inside the city. It was completely unreal to see birds, hippos, zebras, lions, and bears; I genuinely felt like I was in the middle of the jungle.

Something you must keep in mind is that the Parque de la Conservación (Conservation Park), formerly known for decades as the Zoológico Santa Fe, is now a benchmark for biodiversity in Medellín.

photo_2025-10-12_19-34-00.jpg

This space has transcended its initial purpose of simple animal exhibition to become a crucial Science Center and museum entity, refocusing its mission on protection, research, and environmental education. Its evolution, made official in 2020, marks a huge step in the management of wild fauna in Colombia, adapting to new paradigms of animal welfare and species conservation.

The visit to the park offers an enriching experience that goes beyond leisure, becoming a highly educational journey—and mind you, not just for children. The space is excellent for adults because you also get the opportunity to enjoy fresh air, nature, and all that green environment.

As we walked, I learned that the park is home to and a refuge for more than 500 animals, most of them from the American continent and many rescued from illegal trafficking, giving them a second chance in a more suitable environment. Walking through its 5 hectares of dense vegetation, I encountered emblematic species like the jaguar and the spectacled bear, whose stories are used as powerful tools to raise awareness about the country's biodiversity crisis.

For me, this was an unforgettable visit; I felt like a child again, the way I used to when I went out to see the world with my parents. I believe life should be like this: always feeling amazed by the landscapes that surround us.

That’s a lot, more than 500 animals! It’s wonderful that they were rescued. It’s really a great place to bring kids since they’ll surely enjoy seeing different kinds of animals while also learning at the same time.

The Parque de la conversacion sounds like a wonderful place that not only lets visitors admire wildlife but also teaches the importance of protecting it. I love how it’s become a sanctuary for rescued animals and a symbol of conversation in Medellin.

What a great post! How do you choose your walking route in the conservation park? Do you have a favorite trail or a particularly impressive view? Also, from your experience, how safe and comfortable is the park for first-time visitors or young children?
