Western Europe Hit by Massive Freeze

Freezing weather disrupts routine commutes across Western Europe. Flights are grounded, trains are stuck, and folks are wondering if they'll ever get home.

The trouble kicked off earlier this week, around January 6, 2026, when temperatures plummeted below freezing in places like the Netherlands, France, and Belgium. Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport saw over 800 flights scrapped in a single day, leaving more than a thousand passengers camped out overnight on cold floors.

In Paris, buses ground to a halt, and about 140 flights vanished from schedules at major hubs. Even the Eurostar, that speedy link between London and the continent, faced delays as ice coated the tracks.

It's not just air travel taking the hit, roads are a slippery disaster too. Highways in France and the UK are clogged with accidents, and truck drivers hauling goods are backed up for miles. Sadly, the freeze has claimed lives; reports confirm at least six deaths in France and Bosnia from crashes and exposure. Cities are bracing for more snow, which could keep schools closed and businesses slow.
