UPS Job Cuts Signal Big Shift from Amazon Reliance

Yesterday brought some tough news: UPS is planning to slash up to 30,000 jobs this year as it steps back from its heavy dependence on Amazon shipments.

It's a move that's got folks talking about the future of package delivery in a world where online shopping never slows down. The announcement came from UPS executives during an earnings call on January 27, 2026, right here in the US.

CFO Brian Dykes explained that these cuts, mostly in operational roles, will happen through voluntary buyouts for full-time drivers and by not filling positions when people leave naturally.
On top of that, the company will close another 24 facilities to trim costs.

Last year, in 2025, UPS already let go of about 48,000 positions, including 34,000 in operations and 14,000 in management, as part of the same strategy.

UPS has been Amazon's go-to delivery partner for years, but those shipments often come with slim profits.
Now, the company wants to focus on higher-margin business, like medical supplies or international packages, to boost its bottom line.

For workers, especially those long-haul drivers, this could mean tough choices ahead. Still, UPS, the world's biggest package handler based in Atlanta, says these steps are key to staying competitive.
