UK Economy Stalls Out in January

The UK's economy showed zero growth in January, with fresh Office for National Statistics data confirming a complete standstill. This was unexpected, especially amid soaring energy prices triggered by the US-Israel conflict with Iran.
ONS released these numbers today, March 13, 2026, revealing flat GDP at 0% for the month. Analysts expected a 0.2% increase, but it came after December 2025's slight 0.1% gain. Services, the economy's biggest sector held steady, production fell 0.1%, and construction rose slightly by 0.2%. Major hubs like London saw sluggish activity in retail and offices.
It's a weak kickoff to 2026, right when oil prices have surged past $100 a barrel due to the war, fueling inflation risks. Households in cities like Manchester and Birmingham could face steeper heating and fuel costs. Chancellor Rachel Reeves pledged growth after Labour's win under PM Keir Starmer, yet the quarter through January managed just 0.2% expansion, hardly a surge.
Overall, things feel muted, but policymakers are on alert, February's figures might shift the narrative.
