Trump's $1,000 Car Price Promise

President Trump with a bold fix—he's vowing to knock $1,000 off the average new car price by loosening old rules on fuel efficiency. Announced just this week from the White House, it's got drivers buzzing. But in a world of sky-high costs, can we trust it'll actually shift into gear?
The plan rolled out on December 3, 2025, during a briefing with Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy. Trump laid it out plain: ease up on the strict mileage standards automakers have to hit, and suddenly building cars gets cheaper. No more forcing every model to squeeze out extra miles per gallon if it jacks up the upfront cost. Duffy backed it, calling the move part of a bigger push called "Freedom Means Affordable Cars."
Over the next five years, the government figures this could save families a whopping $109 billion in total. Trump added a playful touch by approving the introduction of compact "tiny cars" from Japan—those speedy kei models—to U.S. roads, helping to keep prices affordable.
Car prices have ballooned lately, with the average new ride topping $48,000. Folks from Detroit factory workers to suburban parents are fed up, calling tags "ridiculously overinflated." Tariffs on imports and supply chain disruptions caused by the pandemic made the situation worse.
This rollback targets that pain directly, letting companies like Ford and GM focus on affordable trucks and sedans without the green-tech premium. It's a nod to everyday drivers who just want reliable wheels, not a science project on four tires. If this succeeds, it could help more Americans get behind the wheel of their dream car. Hopefully, it won’t just end up going nowhere.
