Tesla Posts $951M in Bitcoin Holdings Despite 20% Drop in Q1 Auto Revenue

Tesla reported holding $951 million in Bitcoin as of the end of Q1 2025, down from $1.076 billion at the end of 2023, primarily due to a decline in Bitcoin's market price during the quarter.

The company maintained its Bitcoin holdings at 11,509 BTC without any sales in the period, according to on-chain data from Arkham Intelligence.

This valuation reflects Tesla's continued significant position as one of the largest corporate holders of Bitcoin. The company initially invested $1.5 billion in Bitcoin in early 2021 and has since sold a large portion but kept this core holding stable since mid-2023.

Despite the drop in Bitcoin's value, Tesla's Q1 2025 automotive revenue fell 20% year-over-year to $14 billion, contributing to an overall revenue miss with total revenue at $19.34 billion versus analysts' expectations of $21.37 billion. Net income also declined sharply to $409 million from $1.39 billion a year earlier.

Tesla's Bitcoin holdings are now subject to the Financial Accounting Standards Board's updated rules requiring quarterly mark-to-market accounting for crypto assets, which introduces earnings volatility based on Bitcoin price fluctuations. This accounting change allows Tesla to reflect more accurate unrealized gains or losses in its financial reports.

Tesla's Bitcoin investment remains a significant asset valued near $951 million despite a challenging quarter for its core automotive business, highlighting the company's dual exposure to both the electric vehicle market and digital asset markets.
