Tesla: No More Chinese Parts in American-Built Cars

Tesla, the electric car giant led by Elon Musk, has started pushing its suppliers to completely drop components made in China for vehicles built in America. This news broke on November 15, 2025, based on a Wall Street Journal report that caught everyone’s attention.

The company isn’t waiting around. Some parts have already been swapped out for ones produced elsewhere, like in North America or other countries. The plan is to finish the switch for everything else over the next year or two.

People close to the matter say Tesla executives got fed up with the back-and-forth on US tariffs under President Trump, which keep flipping and messing up costs. Add in worries about shortages of key materials, like rare earths for batteries or chips, and it’s clear why they’re acting now.

General Motors did something similar just this week, telling thousands of their suppliers to cut China out too. This shift matters a lot for everyday drivers. It could help shield Tesla from sudden price hikes if tariffs spike again. But honestly, it might push car prices up a bit in the short term while suppliers scramble to find new factories—maybe in Mexico or Southeast Asia.

Tesla has been working on this quietly for the past couple of years, ramping up local sourcing since trade tensions heated up. In the end, moves like this show how messy global trade has become.
