Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele can now run for election indefinitely. On July 31, 2025, El Salvador’s National Assembly, dominated by Bukele’s political party passed constitutional reforms that abolish presidential term limits.

This change allows Bukele, who is currently serving his second term, to seek re-election an unlimited number of times. Additionally, the reforms extend the presidential term from five to six years and eliminate the need for run-off elections. The next presidential election has been moved up to 2027 to align with legislative and municipal elections. These constitutional changes were approved with overwhelming support in the assembly, receiving 57 votes in favor and only 3 against.

Bukele’s party controlled the legislature and the Supreme Court, which previously reinterpreted the constitution to permit his consecutive re-election in 2024 despite original term limits.

Bukele has consolidated power during his presidency by strengthening his party’s control over institutions and implementing strong measures against gang violence, which some applaud for reducing crime rates but which have also drawn criticism from human rights groups for compromising civil liberties.

Opposition lawmakers and critics warn that removing term limits threatens democracy by concentrating power and fostering authoritarianism. They argue that this constitutional overhaul enables a single-party system and undermines democratic checks and balances.

This might seem authotarian, but I dont know. We dont have turn limits here in Sweden for example, never had. And people look at Sweden as a perfect democracy?
