Oil prices surge as OPEC+ halts production increases amid Venezuela tensions

Oil prices are on the upswing today, giving a little boost to folks who watch their gas pump dollars closely. The big news? OPEC+, that powerhouse group of oil-producing nations, just doubled down on holding back production hikes into early next year. Amid all this, new tensions with Venezuela are heating up, showing how problems in one country can send shockwaves worldwide.
On Sunday, November 30, 2025, leaders from OPEC+—that's 12 core countries like Saudi Arabia, plus allies including Russia—wrapped up a virtual meeting. They stuck to their plan, first floated back in early November, to freeze any extra output for January through March 2026. Why? They mention seasonal drops in demand, along with persistent concerns about an oversupply of oil in the market.
Brent crude, the global benchmark, climbed past $63 a barrel in early trading on December 1, while West Texas Intermediate nudged toward $60. That's a solid 1.5% pop from Friday's close, a welcome sight after months of price dips.
U.S. President Donald Trump intensified the pressure over the weekend, firing off warnings about Venezuela's airspace on Saturday—think potential flight bans and worse. By Sunday, he walked it back a bit, but not before traders started buzzing.
Venezuela pumps out around 800,000 barrels a day, a chunk of global supply that's already squeezed by sanctions. Any fresh U.S. pressure could tighten things further, pushing prices higher.
OPEC+ is refraining from a rapid surge in production, potentially stabilizing gasoline prices and avoiding sharp increases. For now, drivers everywhere can breathe somewhat easier.

It seems that in the future, humanity will switch to more renewable energy sources. And oil will remain only as a raw material for materials, and not for obtaining energy.
