Oil Prices Climb Amid Iran Tensions

Oil prices just rose up by about 1% today, due to the escalating issue between the US, Israel, and Iran. It's got everyone from drivers to big companies on edge, wondering if this could mean pricier fuel at the pump soon. On March 3, 2026, US and Israeli forces launched strikes on key targets in Iran, hitting things like nuclear sites and energy spots. Iran fired back hard, attacking tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, that narrow waterway where a ton of the world's oil ships through. We're talking about a fifth of global oil and gas flowing there, and now it's basically shut down for days. Saudi Arabia even had to close one of its refinery after a drone hit, and Iraq's oil output took a dive too.
Brent crude, the benchmark, jumped to around $82 a barrel, up from recent lows. Higher oil costs could push up everything from groceries to plane tickets, fueling inflation worries. President Donald Trump mentioned the US Navy might start escorting ships to keep things moving, but with attacks on at least five tankers already, confidence is shaky.
OPEC+ is trying to pump more oil to ease the squeeze, aiming for an extra 200,000 barrels a day, but if the fighting drags on, experts say prices might shoot to $100 or more.
