Oil and Gas Still Ruling for Another 25 Years, IEA Warns

Imagine this: you fill up your car, heat your home, or fly to see family. Most of that energy still comes from oil and gas. A new report from the International Energy Agency says that demand for these fuels will keep growing until at least 2050 unless the world makes big changes right now. The IEA released its World Energy Outlook on November 12, 2025, in Paris. Analysts there looked at current policies in every country. They found that without stronger rules on emissions or faster shifts to renewables, global oil use will rise by about 10 million barrels a day by 2035. Natural gas demand grows even more in places like India and Southeast Asia, where factories and power plants need cheap energy fast.

Why does this matter to regular people? Higher demand often means higher prices at the pump and for electricity bills. It also slows down the fight against climate change. The report points out that clean energy like solar and wind is expanding, but not quick enough to replace fossil fuels soon.

Leaders at the recent COP30 talks in Brazil promised more action, yet many governments still subsidize oil companies. We keep hearing about electric cars and green power, but the numbers show old habits die hard. The IEA basically says we have a choice: stick to the current path and face tighter supplies later, or speed up the switch to save money and the planet. Bottom line, the next few years decide everything. If countries drag their feet, get ready for more of the same for a generation.
