Massive Outages Leave Thousands Powerless in Denver

On Sunday, February 1, 2026, a huge power outage swept through the southeast metro, knocking out electricity for over 185,000 folks at its worst. It's not just annoying; in the chilly Colorado winter, it's a real hassle for families trying to stay warm and keep things running.

Around mid-afternoon, reports started flooding in from places. Xcel Energy saw about 145,000 customers lose power, while Core Electric Cooperative had 44,000 affected. Even Denver International Airport felt the hit, their train system glitched out, causing delays for travelers rushing through one of the busiest hubs in the country.

The reason isn't clear, though crews suspect potential substation failures or fierce winds of late. Either way, it turned a regular Sunday into chaos for a lot of people. The impact hits hard. Homes went dark, fridges stopped humming, and some areas even had inconsistent 911 service. Businesses shut early, and folks scrambled for generators or hotel rooms.

Officials from Xcel and Core jumped on it quick, working through the evening to change switches back on. By late Sunday, most of Core's customers were back online, but thousands with Xcel were still waiting. Teams were out there in the cold, promising full restoration soon.
