GM's Big Reveal: Can EVs Save the Day or Sink the Ship?

General Motors drops its third-quarter earnings numbers, and everyone's eyes are on Detroit. This isn’t merely a financial update; it offers a glimpse into how the leading automaker is managing its electric vehicle aspirations in a world not yet ready to embrace them. With shares up 9% this year, GM could either shine or stumble, and it feels like the whole auto world is holding its breath.
GM sold over 710,000 vehicles in the U.S. last quarter, an 8% jump from last year. That's huge, right? Brands like Chevrolet climbed 8%, GMC hit 9%, and Cadillac surged 25%—even Buick held steady despite a dip. The real buzz? Electric vehicles flew off lots, up 107% to 66,501 units, a fresh record. CEO Mary Barra has pushed hard on this, aiming for 200,000 EVs built this year alone.
But here's the catch: those sales came right before the $7,500 federal tax credit vanished in September, sparking a buying rush that's left some factories idling and workers on temporary leave.
GM's story mirrors the chaos in cars everywhere—tariffs from the new Trump administration could add $4 billion to $5 billion in costs for parts and metals, hiking prices on everything. Analysts whisper about "downside risks," like higher warranty bills and tweaks to truck lines that might trim profits.
Wall Street expects earnings of $2.26 per share on $44 billion in revenue, down a bit from last year. It's a tightrope: GM is wise to allocate one-third of its budget to gas-powered vehicles, but cutting back on EV investment now seems risky as competitors like Tesla accelerate forward. If GM gets the balance right, it could become the frontrunner.
