GM's Big EV Rethink: A $1.6 Billion Headache Hits Home

The Detroit giant just announced it'll swallow a whopping $1.6 billion charge because its big push into electric vehicles isn't zipping along as hoped. It's a wake-up call for anyone dreaming of a battery-powered future.

GM filed papers with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, laying out the details for its third-quarter results, due out on October 21. The charge splits into two chunks: $1.2 billion in write-downs for unused EV factory gear that's now sitting idle, and $400 million to settle scrapped deals with suppliers.

Mary Barra, who has led GM since 2014, made a bold move investing in EVs back in 2021 aiming for the whole company to run on batteries by 2035. They poured billions into plants in places like Michigan and Ohio. But demand hasn't caught up. Sales of some models are up this year, yet they still make up just a sliver of the market—far from the boom everyone expected a few years back.

Why the pullback? Blame it on policy shifts in Washington. The $7,500 tax break for EV buyers vanished at the end of September under the Trump administration, and rules on car emissions got looser too. Without that encouragement, people keep choosing gas-powered cars or hybrids.

It's not just GM—Ford took a $1.9 billion hit last year for similar reasons, and outfits like Honda and Jeep have ditched EV projects lately. GM's tweaking its factories now, shifting some lines to crank out more SUVs and trucks that run on regular fuel. They say more changes could mean extra costs down the line, but their current EV lineup, stays on sale for buyers who want it.

This situation highlights how challenging it is to pursue future technology when current regulations keep changing. In the end, GM's not quitting EVs—they're just pumping the brakes. Expect their earnings report next week to spill more on how they'll balance the old reliable with the new electric dream. For drivers everywhere, it means choices might lean more toward hybrids for a while.
