Ford's $19.5 Billion Hit as EV Plans Shrink

Ford dropped some surprising news this week that's got everyone in the auto world talking. The company is stepping back from its aggressive push into electric vehicles, and it's going to hurt their profits—a lot. They're expecting to take a massive $19.5 billion charge, mostly hitting their books right now in late 2025.
It all started with slower-than-expected demand for pure electric cars. People love the idea of EVs, but high prices and worries about charging have held many buyers back. On top of that, recent policy shifts in the U.S. have cut some federal support for electrics, making it tougher for companies like Ford to keep pouring money in.
CEO Jim Farley and the team decided it was time to rethink things. They're canceling several planned all-electric models, including a big new F-Series truck that was supposed to roll out from a factory in Tennessee. That plant will now switch to building gas-powered and hybrid trucks instead.
The popular F-150 Lightning pickup won't stay fully electric either—it'll get an update with a gas generator to extend its range. Ford's also ending a battery partnership with South Korea's SK On and repurposing some facilities for energy storage or traditional vehicles.
On the brighter side, this shift means adding thousands of jobs in American factories over the next few years. They're still committed to some electrics, like cheaper models on a new shared platform, and aiming for half their global sales to be hybrids or partially electric by 2030. Despite the huge charge, Ford even bumped up their profit outlook for next year to around $7 billion.
This feels like a realistic move. The EV hype was huge a few years ago, but listening to what customers actually want right now—reliable hybrids over pricey full electrics—might save Ford in the long run. The car business is tough, and adapting quickly could keep them strong.
