ChatGPT-5 upgrade faces user backlash as AI rivals gain ground

The ChatGPT-5 upgrade has faced significant user backlash since its release in August 2025, primarily due to more restrictive rate limits, removal of access to previous GPT models like GPT-4o, and perceived degradation in user experience compared to prior versions.

Many users expressed dissatisfaction on Reddit and other social media, describing the upgrade as "horrible," and some threatened to switch to competing AI platforms. ChatGPT Plus subscribers, in particular, were frustrated by the new message limits (e.g., GPT-5 Thinking capped at 200 messages per week) and the lack of choice to revert to older models, which disrupted workflows and reduced subscription value.

However, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged these issues, pledged improvements including doubling the rate limits for Plus users, and allowed Plus users to continue using GPT-4o temporarily while monitoring usage to decide legacy model availability.

Altman described GPT-5 as a major step towards artificial general intelligence and highlighted its improved coding and agentic capabilities, despite a bumpy rollout with some temporary performance issues.

At the same time, user criticisms are arising amid growing competition from open-source, decentralized, and less capital-intensive AI rivals gaining market share from centralized platforms like OpenAI. This competitive pressure adds context to user dissatisfaction and the challenge OpenAI faces in balancing innovation with user experience.
