Brazil’s data watchdog upholds ban on World crypto payments

Brazil's National Data Protection Authority (ANDP) has upheld its ban on crypto payments associated with the World ID project, citing concerns over user privacy.

The project, formerly known as Worldcoin, involves collecting biometric data through iris scans to create a digital identity, known as a World ID. This digital passport aims to authenticate humans online, but the financial incentives offered in exchange for biometric data have raised concerns about users' ability to consent freely.

The ANDP rejected a petition by Tools For Humanity, the developer of World ID, to reconsider the ban on offering financial rewards, including crypto(Worldcoin - WLD), for users who provide biometric data. If Tools For Humanity resumes data collection activities, it faces a daily fine of 50,000 Brazilian reais ($8,800).

This decision reflects broader regulatory scrutiny of digital identity solutions that involve sensitive biometric data. Despite these challenges in Brazil, the demand for digital identification methods is increasing globally.

World has responded to the ban claiming that there is no exchange of money or tokens during the verification process. However, reports indicate that users have historically received tokens upon completing the iris scan process.
