Bolivia calls crypto ‘reliable alternative’ to fiat

Bolivia has recently signed a significant partnership with El Salvador to promote cryptocurrency as a “viable and reliable alternative” to traditional fiat currencies amid Bolivia’s worsening economic crisis.

This agreement, formalized through a memorandum of understanding, aims to accelerate crypto adoption and modernize Bolivia’s financial system while enhancing financial inclusion, especially for families and small entrepreneurs. The collaboration includes sharing policy development insights and crypto intelligence tools between the countries. El Salvador, as the first country to officially recognize Bitcoin for everyday transactions, brings valuable experience that could help Bolivia navigate potential regulatory and economic challenges.

Bolivia’s pivot towards cryptocurrency follows the lifting of its longstanding crypto ban in June 2024. The crypto uptick in Bolivia is occurring against a backdrop of severe currency instability, with Bolivia’s foreign reserves having plummeted by 98% over the last decade, and the local currency facing steep depreciation. In response, some Bolivian businesses have begun pricing goods in stablecoins like Tether (USDT), and state-owned oil and gas companies have started accepting crypto payments for imports to mitigate US dollar shortages.

This partnership and Bolivia's current crypto embrace reflect a strategic move towards digital currencies as alternatives to fiat, aiming to address deep economic and currency challenges while potentially benefitting from El Salvador’s pioneering experience in crypto governance and adoption.

The agreement is especially timely as Bolivia approaches a critical general election in August 2025, which may influence the direction of such economic policies.
