Dustry Deevers, Oklahoma State Senator has introduced the Bitcoin Freedom Act (SB325), a significant legislative proposal aimed at integrating Bitcoin into the economy of the state. This bill makes it possible for companies to take salaries in Bitcoin and enable businesses the option to choose to get paid in Bitcoin.
Deevers argues that excessive dollar printing by the federal government is reducing Oklahomans' purchasing power, and the measure is intended to protect citizens from inflation and encourage financial flexibility.
The act highlights that participation in Bitcoin payments is entirely voluntary for both employees and employers, aligning with free-market principles.
Workers have the option to get their salary in Bitcoin, US dollars, or both, and they can change their preference at the beginning of each pay period.
The legislation, if passed is expected to take effect on November 1, 2025 and will be reviewed during the upcoming legislative session starting February 3, 2025.
According to Deevers, the potential of Bitcoin as a hedge against inflation due to its limited supply, contrasting it with traditional currencies that can be devalued through monetary policy.
This act's introduction aligns with a broader trend of growing crypto acceptability in the US, especially in view of recent political developments that may favor pro-crypto policies at the federal level.
The act represents an important moment for crypto adoption at the state level, reflecting an expanding recognition of the role of digital currencies in modern economies.
