Some Words Do Sink In - ZAPFIC50 MONDAY (Week of 7/28/25) | Prompt: sanctuary (sanctuario)
I love this week's prompt "sanctuary." It has a special meaning for me. A place of solitude. Of meaning. And of course, safety. A retreat where I can hide away. It doesn't have to be a physical place. I like to think of sanctuary as a haven for the mind and body. I share a flash fiction story in the form of a ZAPFIC50 Monday challenge. This challenge by @felt-buzz is told in exactly 50 words.
My story is below:
Gregory touched her ruddy, sunken checkbone, then adjusted the cover before leaving the room.
Julia had beaten the odds. Hitchhiking 500 miles without incident.
Gone was the anguish this past year.
Questions could wait. As parents, they were merely thankful she remembered his parting words, "you can always come home."

I can actually feel the quiet relief in Gregory’s gesture. I feel like sometimes just making it home is the biggest victory.
Yes, she made it. Not many do given the odds of something terrible befalling them in the world of teen runaways. It was probably the best moment of her dad's life, except when she was born. I'm pleased you felt the love and relief in my story.
