Environment sanitation is the art and science of applying sanitary, biological and physical science principles and knowledge to improve and control the environment and factors therein for the protection of the health and welfare of the public. It involves the provision of clean drinking water and treatment and disposal of human excreta and sewage. It also aims to prevent human contact with feces and promote hand washing with soap. Environment sanitation is essential for reducing the risk of diarrhoea and other diseases that are transmitted through the fecal-oral route, such as cholera, typhoid, intestinal worms and polio. It also has benefits for reducing malnutrition, promoting dignity and safety, especially for women and girls, enhancing school attendance, and preventing the spread of antimicrobial resistance.

Some of the challenges of environment sanitation include the lack of access to safely managed sanitation services, especially in low- and middle-income countries, where over 1.5 billion people still do not have basic sanitation facilities, such as private toilets or latrines. Of these, 419 million still defecate in the open, for example in street gutters, behind bushes or into open bodies of water. This exposes them to various health and social risks, such as infections, stunting, harassment and violence. Another challenge is the inadequate treatment and disposal of wastewater, which can contaminate the environment and the food chain, and pose threats to human and animal health. In 2020, 44% of the household wastewater generated globally was discharged without safe treatment. At least 10% of the world’s population is thought to consume food irrigated by wastewater.

Some of the solutions for environment sanitation include the adoption of a range of sanitation technologies and approaches, such as community-led total sanitation, container-based sanitation, ecological sanitation, emergency sanitation, environmental sanitation, onsite sanitation and sustainable sanitation. These solutions should be tailored to the local context, culture and preferences of the users, and should involve their participation and empowerment.

Another solution is to implement the sanitation value chain or sanitation economy, which focuses on the reuse of the nutrients, water, energy or organic matter contained in excreta and wastewater . This can create opportunities for income generation, resource recovery and environmental protection. Moreover, the recognition of the human right to water and sanitation by the United Nations in 2010, and the inclusion of sanitation as a global development priority and the subject of Sustainable Development Goal 6, can provide a framework and a motivation for improving environment sanitation worldwide.
