No. It's standard. The reason being that when a large group has one bill, people all pay in separately what they "think" they owe. This often ends with whoever is counting up the money being short a decent tip. Then, they either have to make up the difference or "short" the server. As someone who ended up counting the money for the group, I can tell you that 9 times out of 10, it was short and I either had to get people to pony up some more cash, or make up the difference myself. People tend to not add the tax, forget the number of drinks they had, or just be cheap in general. Adding the tip to the bill makes things much easier to calculate and fairer for the server. We can certainly debate whether the 18% they typically add is a little steep, but adding a tip is almost a necessity for large groups.
Makes sense for sure. I've been in groups where the tip was short, and it's awkward to chase people for more cash. Auto-adding it just avoids the hassle, though yeah, 18% can feel a bit much sometimes
