Splinterlands: Sometimes Quantity is better than Quality in Equalizer

Splinterlands is a complex game, and it allows for various different cards and strategies. Each fight is different as there are various different rulesets applied, and this can give specific cards an advantage depending on how you use them. In this post, I talk about a great battle where I won because I used as many melee monsters as I could in an Equalizer fight.

Rule Set, Battle, and Plan

The rulesets this time are Equalizer and Back to the Basics. This means that monsters have no abilities and all monsters start with the same healthThere is also 33 mana available, and I can use fire, water, life, or dragon splinter.

This is an interesting combination of rulesets because the battles are simpler. It's more about the stats that monsters have, and some monsters can be more useful because of the equalizer ruleset. Low health monsters don't have that disadvantage, and having more monsters than your opponent can also give you the ability to outlast your opponent.

My strategy is built using monsters up front to tank the damage while my magic monsters in the back deal damage. For this, I ended up using 3 monsters that cost 4 mana each (the lowest possible mana cost in Frontier). All of those 4 mana monsters will have the same health, so they will be good monsters to delay my opponent. My last two monsters are my magic damage dealers.

Another thing to note is that the back to the basics removes abilities, so melee monsters are not a very good choice. I went with non-attacking monsters and the ranged monster with 4 mana because I wanted to make sure that I had more monsters. It just gives my magic monsters more time to deal damage, and having the ranged mmosnter in the 3rd spot is so that it can do an extra damage or two during the entire fight.

Round 1

round 1.png
At first glance, I think that this match can still go either way. My opponent has chosen to go with 3 magic monsters compared to the two that I have. However, I do have one more monster than my opponent, and hopefully, this is enough to turn the match around. I have a total of 5-6 damage per turn, while my opponent has 7.

Round 5

round 5.png
I lost 3 monsters while my opponent lost 2. This match is looking quite close, but I think that I have this match won. Due to the attack order, my frontmost magic monster will attack before my opponent gets to attack (level 2 epic versus level 1 epic). This will give me a one-round advantage over my opponent (3 damage). Since magic monsters can't miss, this is my win.

I ended up winning this match a few rounds like I thought I would.

Conclusion

The battle this time played out exactly like I planned. Using more low mana monsters worked out better as it gave me more time to wipe out my opponent's monsters. I do think that I was a bit lucky because I happened to have one of my magic monsters as an epic level 2 and this let me go first in the turn order. My opponent was more damage focused while I focused more on surviving, and this worked out for me.

You can see my entire match here.

What did you think of my match? Was there anything you would have done differently? I think it is quite interesting to see how different players use the same card.

Yep that's a good example, quantity, and magic as there is the no ability ruleset aswell... 1 health cards are great on this

Yea. It's good for 1 health monsters but those don't really exist as mcuh in Frontier.

Yea. It's hard when you are at a numberical disadvantage due to the mana cap.

Using many low-mana melee monsters in an Equalizer match is a smart idea, and it clearly worked well for you. It’s nice to see how good strategy and positioning can beat stronger cards. Thanks for sharing your gameplay experience.

It's low mana monsters. It doesn't have to be just melee as the numbers make up for the difference.
