Splinterlands Social Media Challenge: The benefits of using opportunity monsters in Aimless

Splinterlands is a pretty complicated game with interesting battles, with all the options available. This is a part of the weekly social media challenge for Splinterlands. This week is about a great fight where I won because I used monsters with targeted attacks like opportunity.

Featured Ruleset

The ruleset that I am going to talk about is Aimless, and the info above on rulesets can be found here. In this ruleset, all magic and ranged monsters gain the scattershot abilities. The attacks will target a random monster, and you can't choose.

There are two ways to improve your chances at this fight: use support abilities to buff up your speed and stats to get an edge, and the other is to use melee monsters, as they are not affected by the aimless. You can also add abilities such as opportunity or sneak to make them target the same monster.

Rule Set, Battle, and Plan

The ruleset this time is Aimless. There is also 36 mana available, and I can use fire, earth, or life splinter.

SplinterMana CostPositionReason
Underboss Fabino5Summoner+2 melee or poison
Mantaroth111stShield and Armored Strike
Halfling Refugee12nd
Thanalorian Blade63rdOpportunity and Execute
Mad Ogre Anarchist64thOpportunity
Halaran Huntress45thOpportunity and Flying
Ujurak Elder36thDivine Shield and Camouflage
Total Mana:36

I use Underboss Fabino as my summoner for the +2 melee damage to 2 units. I use Mantaroth as my tank with shield and armored strike. Then I have Halfling Refugee, followed by my opportunity monsters, and my last spot is a monster to use up the rest of my mana.

The plan is to kill my opponent before he kills me. My tank and backup tank are there up front to take hits, and the aimless also lets them tank some damage as well. My opportunity monsters are my main damage dealers because they will focus down the monsters with the lowest health to increase my chances of winning this match. My last monster is a filler for that aimless ruleset.

Round 1

round 1.png
At first glance, I think that I have the advantage, but I could still lose. I am glad that I am not using any magic monsters, but his monsters are quite fast compared to mine, and he also has blind, so I can miss. I am most worried about my opportunity monsters dying off before I can kill off my opponent.

Round 6

round 6.png
A few rounds later, and I have lost 2 monsters. I did miss quite a few attacks before I managed to wipe out my opponent's backline. Without the healer, my opponent won't be able to beat me. With the damage I have left, I should win this match if I don't miss too many attacks.

I ended up winning this match a few rounds later as I expected.

Conclusion

The battle this time did not play out as I planned, but it worked well enough. I was not expecting my opponent to have faster monsters than me, and they had a blind monster. This caused me to miss quite a few attacks, and I lost two monsters because of it. Also, it looks like wing break takes precedence over aimless, so my first opportunity died without being able to do anything. I am just glad that the rest of my opportunity monsters pulled through, and that I didn't put that +2 melee damage buff on it. Overall, it worked out for me even if it took longer than expected.

You can see my entire match here.

What did you think of my match? Was there anything you would have done differently? I think it is quite interesting to see how different players use the same card.

I also pick the more melee option when there is scattershot rule!
