Splinterlands: New Beluroc Aegis's taunt is useful in Noxious Fumes
Splinterlands is a complex game, and it allows for various cards and strategies. Each fight is different as there are various rulesets applied, and this can give specific cards an advantage depending on how you use them. In this post, I talk about a great battle where I won because I used A'lan Musketeer.
Featured cards

New Beluroc Aegis is a neutral splinter that costs 8 mana. This splinter starts with the taunt ability. Leveling up this card only increases the stats of this monster. I use this monster quite often in Frontier because taunt makes it a very good monster to use. It is able to soak up quite a bit of damage.
Rule Set, Battle, and Plan

The rulesets this time are Noxious Fumes and Fire & Regret. This means that all monsters start off poisoned and with the return fire ability. There is also 76 mana available, and I can use water, earth, life, or death splinter.
This fight is interesting because of the poison and the return fire. Ranged monsters aren't as useful due to the counter damage, and the poison can easily kill you off if you aren't being careful.
| Splinter | Mana Cost | Position | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aurelia | 6 | Summoner | +1 Health |
| Dread Tafarian | 9 | 1st | Heal |
| Mad Gearhead | 6 | 2nd | Reach |
| Giam Root | 9 | 3rd | Strengthen |
| Glimmermancer | 6 | 4th | |
| Time Bandit | 8 | 5th | Cleanse |
| New Beluroc Aegis | 8 | 6th | Taunt |
| Total Mana: | 52 |
My summoner is Aurelia for its +1 health. My tank is Dread Tafarian with heal. After that is Mad Gearhead with reach, followed by Giam Root with strengthen. I have two magic monsters, and one of them has cleanse after. My last monster is New Beluroc Aegis for that nice taunt ability.
The focus of this lineup is just to survive as long as possible with my tank while my Dread Tafarian and other monsters stay alive. New Beluroc Aegis is nice because it will attract the damage from any ranged, magic, sneak, or opportunity monsters. I also have Giam Root because that +1 health will be nice for Aegis and Dread. It might take some counter damage, but it has a high health pool even with that. The rest of my monsters are there for damage.
Round 1

At first glance, I think that I have the advantage in this fight. Since I have Aegis with taunt, and my opponent doesn't, I will be able to deal damage to his tank while he can't. With this, I should be able to take out his tank before he takes mine. My opponent does have more damage than me so I just hope that I can last long enough for that poison to wipe out my opponents backline.
Round 5

My Dread is still alive, but my opponent's is dead. Based on this, I don't think I can lose this match. My opponent is down some damage, and Dread will survive another round before my opponent can kill it due to its heal ability. So this match is my win. My opponent will lose 2 monsters to the poison so I have the absolute damage advantage.

After a few more rounds, I won the match as I expected.
Conclusion
The battle this time went exactly how I planned it. New Beluroc Aegis tanked enough hits to guarantee me the advantage in the Dread versus Dread match. With my tank alive, I was able to soak up damage from my opponent, and my opponent just folded to the poison damage over time. Despite his damage advantage, he just could not take out my Dread as it healed up every turn.
You can see my entire match here.
What did you think of my match? Was there anything you would have done differently? I think it is quite interesting to see how different players use the same card.
