Splinterlands Engagement Challenge: Splinterlands Learning Journey

Every week there is a Splinterlands challenge that can be found in this week's post. I also encourage Splinterlands players to partake in the challenge because they get to learn about the game. In this week's challenge, we talk about my Splinterlands Learning Story.

My Splinterlands Learning Story

What was the biggest hurdle you faced when learning Splinterlands?

The biggest hurdle for me was to understand the abilities available. Splinterlands has plenty of cards, and each card has different abilities. Depending on the ruleset, some of these abilities can also be more powerful. It doesn't help that new abilities are being added to the game; this becomes even harder. At the same time, I think that certain cards synergize well together due to their abilities as well.

Which feature or mechanic took the longest to fully understand?

I think the mechanic that took the longest for me to fully understand was how the order system works in Splinterlands. I understand it now, but when I first played, I thought that speed was everything. However, that doesn't take into consideration the combat style, rarity, and level of the card. So I could never figure out why I was getting the win or getting destroyed on the other end.

What advice would you give to your past self—or a brand-new player—starting today?

My first advice is to just play the game. You learn more by playing games, and there is just too much going on. It's easier to learn from your wins and losses as you play your own lineups. I would say that I learned far better through trial and error from these fights. I also think that losing a match isn't that bad. You can find out good cards or combinations to use in later fights.

Are there any specific players, guides, or moments that helped you grow the most?

I believe the best way to learn is through tournaments. When I was first learning, I was playing in Untamed only bronze tournaments. The number and level of cards in these fights are limited. This let me focus more on the limited choice and see which combinations worked out. When I lost to the same lineup multiple times, I found it interesting to see why this lineup was so good. It was the best way to learn about which abilities synergize well together, and which cards also worked well as a tank up front.

Also, these battles in tournaments have rulesets. So, I was able to understand why the rulesets mattered, and in which cases, I should use certain abilities or cards. Tournaments are what I consider the best way for any new player to learn the system in the game. I feel that doing the battles yourself also helps you learn, and if you are willing to learn from why you lost, it will make you a better player. Splinterlands is a complicated game due to the rulesets and abilities. The number of abilities just continues to increase, so I think that the tournament's ability to limit the cards further makes it easier to learn.

Conclusion

It was nice to reflect on how I learned the mechanics in the game. Splinterlands is a complicated game, and with all the different abilities, it can be rough. I know that Splinterlands has already created campaigns and released foundation cards to teach people the game, but I feel that dipping their toes into the fights will help out more. Seeing more examples of which abilities work out well is just more helpful, in my opinion.

That's true, the order always gave me troubles too! I remember I used to get mad at it

Yea. The order took me a while to figure out. It's probably the thing that helps quite a bit, but you don't realize all the factors until later.

There are newer abilities everyday, and people have to always learn new abilities usage and master the game dynamics as well. I used to enjoy doing it in the past.

Yea. The mix and match of abilities is one of the things you need to master if you want to improve your win rate. The new abilities add so many new factors, and when you add in the bloodline summoners, it gets more chaotic.

The bloodline of a thing makes it even complex. It's a win for people who can buy one summoner and use it to play across different elements
