Splinterlands Engagement Challenge: Battlefield Breakthroughs! Thanalorian Scion in Thick skinned

Every week there is a Splinterlands challenge that can be found in this week's post. I also encourage Splinterlands players to partake in the challenge because they get to learn about the game. In this week's challenge, we talk about a good battle with Thanalorian Scion in the Thick Skinned Ruleset

Thanalorian Scion is a water splinter that costs 5 mana. This splinter starts with low health and speed, but it has high armor. It starts off with corrosive ward and void armor. It learns true strike at level 5. As it levels up, the speed and health never change, but that void armor ability is what makes this card great. At level 11, it's the equivalent of 11 health so long as the opponent does not have the shatter ability, even if the opponent is using magic monsters. I don't think the true strike does much on a magic monster, but I guess it might be useful if the opponent has phase.

Rule Set, Battle, and Plan

The ruleset this time is Thick Skinned. This means that all monsters gain the shield ability, and this means that all physical damage (melee or ranged) is halved. There is also 14 mana available, and I can use fire, water, life, or dragon splinter.

I use Marlai Singariel as my summoner because of the +1 magic. Thanalorian Scion is my tank for the void armor. Argarux Magus is my second monster as an extra magic damage dealer.

My strategy is to outlast my opponent. Thanalorian Scion is a very good choice for this because it has void armor and a ton of armor. Adding in this with the shield from the ruleset, it can survive quite a bit. I should be dealing decent magic damage with my summoner, but it could go sideways if my opponent has a way to decrease my magic damage.

Round 1

At first glance, I think that I have an advantage in this fight. My opponent has quite a few powerful monsters in the back with strong attacks, but those monsters also start off burned and their damage is halved due to the shield.

Round 3

My opponent is down to just one monster left, and it can't deal any damage to me. So this match is my win. My tank managed to outlast the backline monsters until they died due to the burn. My opponent may have void, but it is just a matter of time before I win.

I ended up winning this match later that round as I expected.

Conclusion

The battle this time did play out as I expected. It was a low mana match, and there was thick skin in the ruleset. So it was advantageous to use Thanalorian Scion who has a low mana cost and the void armor ability. By combining it with my summoner, I ensured that it would at least deal damage against void monsters as long as they can't reduce my magic damage. I was a bit worried when I saw so many monsters on my opponent's side, but I realized that some of them started off burned. It's a good thing that Thanalorian Scion has plenty of armor and it was able to just outlast my opponent. I think my opponent made a mistake by not using magic monsters to get around the ruleset.
