Splinterlands: Avoid using melee monsters in Briar Patch
Splinterlands is a complex game, and it allows for various cards and strategies. Each fight is different as there are various rulesets applied, and this can give specific cards an advantage depending on how you use them. In this post, I talk about a great battle where I saw a battle where I took advantage of the ruleset.
Rule Set, Battle, and Plan

The rulesets this time are Briar Patch and Shades of Gray. This means that all monsters gain the thorns ability, and only neutral monsters can be used. There is also 54 mana available, and I can use any splinter except for water or death.
It's an interesting fight since we are limited to neutral monsters, and melee monsters are at a disadvantage.
| Splinter | Mana Cost | Position | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Barthalamas | 6 | Summoner | +1 speed |
| Spellmonger | 4 | 1st | Thorns |
| New Beluroc Aegis | 8 | 2nd | Taunt |
| Lunaki Howler | 7 | 3rd | |
| Great Bear Druid | 9 | 4th | |
| Grand Consul Minion | 4 | 5th | |
| A'lan Musketeer | 8 | 6th | Double Strike |
| Total Mana: | 46 |
My summoner is Barthalamas for the +1 speed. I have Spellmonger as my tank. After that is New Beluroc Aegis with taunt. Lunaki Howler and Great Bear Druid are my magic monsters. Finally, I have two ranged damage dealers Grand Consul Minion and A'lan Musketeer.
The focus of this lineup is to keep my monsters alive while dealing damage and outlasting my opponent. The first two monsters are there just to tank hits while the rest of my lineup deals damage. A'lan Musketeer is the strongest damage dealer that I have, so it can stack up quite a bit of damage.
Round 1

At first glance, I think that I have the advantage. My opponent has four melee monsters, and three of them can attack from their position. So the thorns will kick in and deal quite a bit of damage.
Round 4

A few rounds later, my opponent is down to 2 monsters, while I still have 4. This is my win because my opponent just doesn't have enough damage to overcome my lineup.

I won later that round.
Conclusion
The battle did not go exactly as planned. My tanks took the damage, and I won because my opponent self-destructed with most of his melee monsters due to the thorns. It never hurts to pay attention to the ruleset and play what you can at an advantage.
You can see my entire match here.
What did you think of my match? Was there anything you would have done differently? I think it is quite interesting to see how different players use the same card.
