Learning About the New Security Feature

Since the 2021 batch of American Silver Eagles, the reeding on the edge of the coin has been customized to act as a security feature.

I've been researching to learn more about this "security feature" that has been incorporated in the 2021, 2022 and 2023 Silver Eagles.

The new reverse design created by Emily Damsta will include the reeded gap enhanced security feature. As an anti-counterfeiting measure, within the reeded gap edge, there are very small spaces. Whether for future releases, the size or position of those spaces will change has not yet been determined. The Type-2 1-ounce American Gold Eagle Brilliant Uncirculated coins featuring their new reverse created by Jennie Norris will also include this enhanced security feature.

I'm not sure HOW a missing reed would deter counterfitting, but it seems as if it works. The new fake silver eagles have all the reeds intact, along with an obviously fake looking design.

Each year has moved the missing reed to a different location. Originally (2021) it was under the date, but it moved for 2022 and has moved again 2023. Even moving the "missing reed" doesn't seem like an effective "security feature" since a counterfitter can just as easily mimic that particular year's design. I suppose it would be a lot more work filing off one particular reed from every fake coin, but still.

I guess fake silver eagles are a thing. People are buying them online and when they try to sell them to a coin shop or pawn shop, it's quickly determined to be a fraud.

Thankfully, my coin passes all the tests. It's the correct weight, not magnetic, rings like silver, missing reed... and it just looks right.
