Largest stablecoin issuer, Tether, eyes $500B valuation with $20B raise

Tether, the issuer of the $172.80B stablecoin, USDT, is reportedly looking to raise up to $20 billion at a $500B valuation.

USDT is the largest stablecoin by market capitalization and has raked in $4.9B in revenue for Q2, 2025, making Tether one of the most profitable companies in the world by revenue-per-employees.

According to a Bloomberg report, Tether is in talks with investors to raise between $15B and $20B through a private placement, for reportedly up to 3% stake, according to people familiar with the matter, the report adds.

This development comes to contradict Bo Hines, the newly appointed CEO of Tether USAT, a US-focused stablecoin issuer, who on Tuesday, spoke in a conference in Seoul, revealing that the company has no plans to raise additional funds.

At the time of writing, Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether has confirmed that the company is exploring a raise from a selected group of high-profile key investors, adding that the capital will go towards maximizing the scale of the Company's strategy across all existing and new business lines including stablecoins, distribution ubiquity, AI, commodity trading, energy, communications, and media, via X.

This comes two days after Stable, the institutional grade blockchain built for stablecoins and backed by USDT0 team and Bitfinex, announced PayPal’s strategic investment into Stable, to bring PYUSD onto the Stablechain, aiming at expanding its Distribution, Utility, and Liquidity, the announcement highlights.

As the largest stablecoin issuer, Tether's USDT serves over 500M people, moving as much as $27.6T annually.

Since January 2020, Tether's USDT has grown from just $4B in market capitalization to $172.80B today, becoming the third largest/most valuable crypto asset.

Leading payments on major blockchains including Ethereum and Tron, USDT has had a record dominance of the stablecoin market, with recent capital raise looking to scale this business by several orders of magnitude.

At a $500B valuation, Tether comes into the ranks of the world’s most valuable companies and a widely profitable private entity.
