A grateful heart

Truly all fingers are not equal like they say as our fingers are of different sizes, shapes, and usage.

I was reflecting on my life today and realized I haven’t been as grateful as I should be because c’mon my life has been going smoothly so far.

I sometimes beat myself up for being ungrateful, I am not where I want to be yet but I can comfortably afford 3 to 4 square meals every day without going broke, breaking the bank, or borrowing money from anyone while there are some people who cannot afford to eat a single meal and yet they look more happy and grateful than us.

While life has been fair to some of us, life has been terrible to some people, terrible that most of them have lost hope that things would be better. While some of this set of people put in a lot of work to be successful it’s unfortunate that they are still struggling. There's this childhood friend of mine that we grew up together, there's no job she hasn't had to do, but every day, it feels like it keeps getting worse, and it pricks my heart that I can't do so much for her, and she just keeps struggling

I stay alone meaning I have just myself to feed yet whenever I calculate how much I spend for feeding alone I am always in awe and I can’t help but wonder how people who earn way less than me and have larger families to fend for get by.

I went to braid my hair on Wednesday in a salon and my hairstylist spent hours braiding my hair as well as her daughter who was assisting her, when they finished they were so exhausted and hungry and I felt some sort of way.

The money we negotiated was nothing compared to the time and effort they used in making my hair beautiful and they do this every single day. They go through this level of exhaustion every single day just to be able to feed their families.

This woman is the breadwinner of her family, she tries to gather this little money from her business and it’s glaring that it is not enough but she has refused to give up.

I thought about this family and I was sad, the little money this woman and her daughter stood hours to earn is what some of us can finish in a matter of seconds, it's the same money some of us can give out to people and it's the same money some of us can spend on irrelevant things but this was what this woman stood for hours to earn, this was her “daily bread”

Things like these are the reasons why I do not bargain too much for the prices of goods whenever I go to the market. While some people are greedy they use the current economy to their advantage some are just trying to get by and keep their business afloat from the little profit they make from selling these goods.

Some of us do not know how blessed we are. There are certain conditions some of us can't be in or cannot relate to because we know we have the money that can rescue us at any time. While there are some people who if you squeeze them and all their family members together they will still be unable to raise that sort of money that can come to their rescue if the need arises.

While we complain about little things like acne appearing on our faces, or our skin looking dull we should remember that some people have worse problems than us and try to be grateful at all times.
