What's up with Szczesny?
Hi community!
The Pole's contract expires in two days and he still hasn't renewed, although he has already accepted Barça's offer to stay for another year.
Wojciech Szczesny went on vacation with a renewal offer from FC Barcelona and has yet to renew with just two days left until his current contract with the Catalan club expires. The Polish goalkeeper, who arrived at Barça in early October following Marc-André ter Stegen's serious injury, has nevertheless given his approval to the sporting directors led by Deco to continue for another year with Hansi Flick's squad.
The verbal agreement between both parties is complete, and the contract is ready for the Pole to sign it. He could do so in the coming days, before returning to training and beginning preseason training under Flick on July 13. In this regard, the Blaugrana club affirms that everything is arranged and agreed upon, and that there are no problems with the Pole's continued contract, having become the team's starting goalkeeper in January, replacing Iñaki Peña.
Szczesny, who was retired, accepted Barça's offer to return to the gloves to cover for Ter Stegen. It took him a while to get fit and get back into rhythm, but Flick gave him a starting role in January, coinciding with the Spanish Super Cup, making him the first-choice goalkeeper until the end of the season. He ended up playing 30 matches and earning his place. When Barça offered him a contract extension, he hesitated between accepting it or returning to retirement, but ultimately decided to stay.
The Pole is one of four goalkeepers Barça currently has in the squad following the signing of Joan Garcia, who arrives from Espanyol to be a starter. The sporting director's intention is for Garcia and Szczesny to form the goalkeeping partnership and to release both Ter Stegen and Iñaki Peña.
The German has three years left on his contract, and the club wants him out because they don't want a substitute goalkeeper to command such a high salary. The captain, however, isn't willing to make things easy and, for now, is only thinking about staying and fighting for a starting spot. Flick will speak with him when the squad returns to training and explain his plans for the goalkeeper. Iñaki Peña, meanwhile, wants to leave the club after losing his starting spot in the second half of last season. He has one more year on his contract and is considering the offers his agent has received.
See You soon!
