Gerard Martín talks about his future.
Hi community!
The Barça full-back is back in Barcelona for surgery after sustaining an injury with the U-21 national team.
Gerard Martín landed at Barcelona airport this Friday afternoon to undergo surgery for a dislocated fifth metacarpal in his right hand, which will require immediate surgery. Upon his arrival, the left-back addressed the news surrounding his future. Two Premier League teams, Wolverhampton and Bournemouth, are reportedly interested in the Sant Andreu de la Barca native after a season in which he became a key player for Hansi Flick's team—especially following Alejandro Balde's injury—and was called up to the U-21 national team. In fact, this unfortunate hand injury occurred in La Rojita's debut match in the European Championship, in which Gerard started.
"These things happen. In the end, I don't pay attention to them; I'm focused on Barça, and the truth is, I'm happy with my season," Gerard Martín told Jijantes. The Barça defender also emphasized that "I think the staff is also happy with me, with my growth, and what I still have to improve. The truth is, I don't think about anything else but Barça. I'm calm," concluded Gerard Martín, who thus expressed his desire to remain with the Barcelona squad next season despite the offers.
The Under-21 European Championship was the culmination of a season in which Gerard Martín has burst onto the elite football scene with unusual force. The injury against Slovakia shattered any forecasts for further appreciation, but even so, the player from Sant Andreu de la Barça has dropped from his current market value of €12 million, 4 million more than in the previous analysis by the specialized portal Transfermarkt. When he signed last season from Cornellà to play for the Barcelona reserve team, his value was €300,000. His emergence has therefore been meteoric.
To the point of finishing his first season in the FC Barcelona first team with 42 appearances and almost 1,800 minutes of play (1,793 minutes). His participation and influence on the game have progressively increased, culminating in six assists and one goal, the one he scored against Real Sociedad at Montjuïc.
Gerard Martín is therefore focused on Barça and hopes there are no developments regarding his future, although it remains to be seen whether English clubs maintain their interest and whether more suitors join in the coming weeks.
