Low self-esteem can be a major factor too. If you don't have faith in yourself, it's really challenging. There's someone who isn't unintelligent, but drastically underachieves—just doing enough to get by and living a modest life.

The reason? He's battled random episodes of depression since his teenage years, and he's hesitant to use androgens as a possible remedy, which might be more beneficial for him than SSRIs, so he's let years slip away.
It's sad to witness because he's a genuinely good person who deserves more. Unfortunately, you can't force someone to improve their situation. People often create their own limitations and then question why they're stuck.
Even when offered a solution, they hesitate, believing they're destined to remain confined.
