A Benefital Grading System In Education
Hello friends, happy new week. Wishing us all an amazing and productive week ahead. Starting the week participating in the @hivelearners week 86, and edition 1.
They say education is the key, and this keeps me wondering if we can still say that currently. There are many loopholes in the educational system that need to be filled. Days back, barely a week later, I asked my friend. Is the settling of life, what plan is school? She replied plan C. We laughed but I had to ask her why she said that. She was like she likes fashion designing and would want to venture in it when she's done. She's just going to school to get the certificate and because her parents asked her to and gave me instances of people who have graduated and are still looking for a job.
We go to school only to be advised by our lecturers to still learn a skill and be ready for the outside world. Education does not only teach us our course. It also teaches building character. I would say education is not a scam but the system of education is.
If only our leaders knew that education is the biggest form of the country's education, they would invest more in it than their selfish interest.
There's really something in the educational sector I would love to remove especially in Nigeria that is our "grading system". I really don't like how we grade people. Grading should be done based on practical(skills) and theory(classroom).
I had a conversation with my friend who is studying civil engineering. He currently haven't problem with calculations and theory courses but he knows about all civil engineering drawing softwares and the practical. He complains bitterly to me that the theory part in school he fails to understand because most lecturers are just explaining through the text book and not what they see on site. When he was working on site he was one of the best students but in the classroom they assumed he was dull.
The educational system should grade students on both and see if students won't improve dramatically. If a student is doing poorly they should be called in order to ask them what the problem is and how they can fix it. Most students are also doing badly in school because they were forced to study what they are currently doing without their approval.
You tend to learn easier when you love what you are learning. Forcing a child to school is just like you are buying that certificate for yourself but not the knowledge attached to it.
I would also add extra activities in school that will make the child fun. Although most modern school little by little are adapting it but I will make a must for all school. Many students are good at basketball, football and will become world players in the future but these talents are not seen because we think that everybody must go to school. Well, school is not bad but not all children are born to be doctors, engineers, lawyers.
A friend of mine is in this situation right now and am sure his dad is regretting right now. He plays football very well. Like even when we host games in our school he plays for my department very well. Last time we played the V.C cup, where all played till the last game. My department won because he scored the last goal.
He's a close friend of mine so he told me this story himself. When he was done with secondary school his dream was to be a footballer. He even got the opportunity to travel but his dad didn't let him and told him he must go to school. Now he has lost that opportunity and is not doing very well in school too. He can't hate his father for that but I advised him not to give up on his dream.
Thank you for reading
I also hate the way we do our grading over here, most especially how exams are structured. They are done in a way that mostly favours those that knows how to cram, and a lot of people usually forget most details about a course or subject few weeks after an exam. But when it comes to practical exams, that one is the true test of knowledge. You have to use what you know to solve a problem with your own hands, that's the best way to learn. You did a very good job in analyzing this problem, well done 👍
😂😂😂 to be sincere after exams I forget what I read
I read to pass
Our grading system is poor and it makes me feel like they want us to fail all the time. They grade us and make us feel like we are dull. We're not dull abeg
Yes you're not
There's light after school
They should know that
Maybe schools need to work with employers and do an intern part of learning where the students get hands on in the field that they have chosen. That way, for those who don't do so well in the classroom, might actually do better there because of the hands on situation. Also, it gives the student a chance to dip their toe in and see if it's for them.
Aptitudes should not be ignored like your friend's was for football. Now he's just miserable from the sound of it, and I'm hopeful his father sees this and helps him to achieve his dream.

Hello @graciousvic Interesting topic that you share with us and present for socialization. In particular I think that education systems are in crisis in many countries around the world, they are in obsolescence. They must be transformed. Today the competencies of students, with their skills and abilities, must be considered in dynamism. In a curriculum that is flexible and adaptable to the demands of the country. My country, Venezuela, does not escape the reality you mention. I support well-executed vocational tests. Because they guide students who have doubts about their future and path in a university career.
Until another opportunity, successful week.
There is a different way to grading instead of saying a number for the knowledge just saying that if you achieved or not what was required for that knowledge.
