The radiation pressure of an electromagnetic wave is something that has allowed us to invent one of what I consider to be one of the most beautiful magics of modern physics, namely solar sails. Solar sails are devices that allow probes to travel in space. Let's go over the concept in a simple way. Radiation pressure is a very weak force generated by light when it hits a surface. Even though photons have no mass, they have momentum, so they can transfer a very small push. The solar sails applied on IKAROS work like a sailboat but with sunlight instead of wind. IKAROS was the first spacecraft in the world to successfully use a solar sail as the main propulsion system during an interplanetary journey. A spaceship that has sails moved by light!!
