Donating of organs, is it acceptable?: MCGI Topic Review
In this video lesson, Brother Eli Soriano shares his thoughts about organ donation and its compatibility with the principles of Christianity. The teachings which he gives herein, based on deep roots from the Bible, offer an interesting angle of viewing how believers should give, including offering our body parts to save others.
Brother Eli’s message is founded on Christian perspective on community living. He highlights a very significant verse in 1 John 3:16 “Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.” This scripture sets a framework for understanding just how much love and sacrifice Christians are expected to express.
According to Brother Eli, as Jesus Christ offered himself as a sacrifice for us then it should be our duty that we do likewise. It is challenge meant to make us think; if we can give out lives for our brothers in faith why not an eye so that someone can see or a kidney to save somebody’s life?
Humans can survive on one kidney, which is why a healthy person may give away their kidney to someone else who needs it. Brother Eli asks thought-provoking questions: “Can’t you as a wife donate your kidneys to your husband or children? Or if you are a husband, can’t you give one of your kidneys to your wife or son?” These inquiries compel us to think about how deep our love is and how much we are willing to do for the sake of our loved ones.
Brother Eli tells us that giving away part of ourselves is not wrong in God’s eyes. Also, in support of this idea, he cites Romans 16:3-4 where Priscilla and Aquila were ready to lay down their lives for Apostle Paul. He argues that if they could risk having their throats slit for Paul, then being Christians who care about others should make it possible for us to think about giving out parts like the kidney among other organs needed by fellow humans.
It is worth noting that Brother Eli strongly opposes doctrines discouraging blood donation which he refers as “dumb”. This is because according to him, when commanded to lay down our lives for our brethren, we should be even more ready to donate small quantities of blood or body parts for the purpose of saving people’s lives.
Brother Eli Soriano extend the lesson to the concept of Organ donation after death. He tells of how he had spoken to his brother in the United States about the possibility of giving out body organs when he dies in an accident. This is where Brother Eli’s point of view becomes poetic and profound: “live beyond your death” through organ donation. Eli asserts that if someone gets your donated heart, for instance, and it takes her a whole decade of her life after you die or another person sees because of the eyes you donate, then something is still alive in you even though it is gone with time.
To round it up, Brother Eli Soriano's teachings on organ donation present a compelling case for Christians to consider this act as an expression of love and sacrifice. His interpretation of scripture encourages Christians to view organ donation not just acceptable but noble and Christ-like. Organ donating therefore can make us like Jesus who loved us with all his life even after we are dead.
Through actions such as these, we learn that faith is expressed through things made by our hands and hearts.” This comment forces us to think about parting ways with our body parts for other people’s sake.” In the end, perhaps his reflections will cause us to lead full lives.
There are religions that don't allow it, but my personal opinion is that if you can do it, do it. Donating organs is giving life to another person. The same goes for blood transfusions.
God sends us to serve, to help others, and for me that is part of it.
