Extensive attempts to get GPT 5.4 working with OpenClaw failed; it's just not there.
Opus 4.6 performs much better.
There isn't strong competition at the frontier right now; Anthropic appears to be leading, with others trailing.

Grok excels at research and fact-checking. Gemini and Grok are both far better for image and video, largely because Anthropic doesn't focus on those modalities.
GPT 5.4 remains a solid generalist at a good price.
On specialization, OpenAI currently lacks offerings, and that gap could prove costly.
Once rivals begin leveraging new compute clusters, the balance could flip quickly. Anthropic seems to have made notable errors in securing long-term compute.
A plausible timeline: Anthropic holds the lead through midyear, then Grok and Gemini mount a major comeback for first place.
The only sustainable path for OpenAI may be to ultra-specialize around OpenClaw and become the best value brain for agentic tools and harnesses.
